February, a heater month.
I never thought I could fall in love with a sport, a ball and a court.
Expectations make me realize that I am not as grateful as I should be sometimes. I may be what they call ambitious; I always want more. Or I think I need more.
Before coming here, the only thing I wanted to do was play basketball. I wanted it even more than the fact of a family hosting me. Sports are and will always be my shelter. When I am in the court, I feel like all my problems started to seem less important.
This basketball season has ended for me; we lost our first playoffs´game against a team that we beat twice in regular league; now I feel a small empty space inside me.
No being able to wear their colors anymore, people cheering, go out the hornets´ banner when the beat drops, the bus trips, the bruises on my knees, arrive home late knowing that I have to wake up early the next day, the butterflies in my stomach…And being a starter? That is definitely a dream come true. But there is a thing that I can highlight: Confidence; I never thought this could be so essential. That is my word of the month.
Mi coach has been elemental this year, and I do not really think how much she means to me. She has taught me to believe in myself inside and outside the court, to fight through my fears, to work hard and not take it easy, and that if I want I can. I arrived to a new team on the opposite side of the ocean playing as a post and I come back shooting threes. Confidence. I never thought this word, this belief in my own self, could make such a change in me.
A new month means a new life lesson. This time was in a special day for me: my birthday. I organized a small party and I invited all the people that I considered my friends. Not even half of that people came and, in that moment, I realized that true friends are counted with one hand and that I have to be grateful what I have instead of being sad for my high expectations. I just need to create my own story.
This date was another one of those homesick moments.
I have also realized that I have the best exchange sister I could ever have had. Suim has been by my side every single day. If you are reading this, thank you for everything.
When I first started to write on this blog, I never thought I would live such a random experience. Everything was very organized in my head; I had clear ideas. What I did not know was how surprising was all this going to be in reality.
I am a very honest person and that´s why I thought it was fair to talk about both the good and the bad. The fact that this experience is not perfect does not mean that I am not enjoying it. It makes it more interesting in my own perspective; that is how you reach personal growth in the end: learning from our mistakes. I have learned to accept my situation and to not compare with other students because we all have our own issues.
We all have dark moments; we just need to find the light at the end of the tunnel.
These three months left are going to be a new phase for me; they are going to be more lessons to learn and some more sur(PROM)prises…
Thank you for reading me another month.
